“INTERNET OF THINGS” IS THE FUTURE!

IoT Is Future

The thermostat in my house checks with an internet weather site and determines the outside-inside temperature difference. After checking with the house security system, it decides there are no open doors or windows and the A/C is working too hard for the temperature, so it needs service. It connects to my “trusted” A/C service and makes an appointment after listing the issues. At the time of the appointment, it programs the front gate and home service entrance lock to admit the serviceman based on his Bluetooth identity at the appointed time. After verifying that the AC is fixed and none of the security points have been tampered with like safe, jewelry chest, AV-equipment is still connected, it authorizes payments to the serviceman. This is one of the many examples of IoT in Consumer Automation.

Automation industries are those wherein human assistance is minimized to complete a process or procedure. The acronym IoT which stands for “Internet of things” basically is pretty much anything that is Internet-enabled and would normally be considered a “smart” device.

In today’s internet, the overwhelming majority of IP addresses are held by computers and computer-like devices, whose function is to make calculations and display them to users as information terminals. I mean desktop computers, laptops, tablets, smartphones etc. This is often known as the Internet of Computers as most of them are networked computers.

The vision in Internet of Things is a vast majority of the internet IP addresses will be used not by computers but by things. Not that there will be fewer computers but they will be hugely outnumbered by things.

If you ask, What Things? Here’s a list of stuff that will have IP addresses and wireless connections:

  • Light bulbs (so you can monitor power usage, life, state, and set the brightness levels and on/off timers)Your oven, your stove, your microwave
  • Your refrigerator so you can check the temperature and scan it for stock
  • Your car – door locks and ignition now controlled by wireless proximity keys which in turn will be controlled by Bluetooth and you will use the internet to program who gets to use it for what and when and see where it is and where’s it been and how fast its been going (watch out teen drivers).

Industrial control systems (ICS/SCADA) are moving towards IIoT (Industrial Internet of Things). By inserting some intelligence in the devices, or flowing the legacy protocols through an IoT gateway, IoT analysis and control systems can benefit from AI, data science, better efficiency, just-in-time parameter changes, etc. With IoT not only the automation of industry will become more efficient with minimum human interference but also accuracy in results will increase due to collection of data and artificial intelligence will also be more effective day by day resulting in the program taking responsibility for decision making which reduces the human error.

Benefits of the Internet of Things:

  • Generation of new ideas along with a greater innovation and efficiency in the business.
  • Internet is connected to around 6.5 billion devices which are expected to rise to 50- 70 billion approximately this year.
  • The information is accessible everywhere in the world.
  • Business will be able to compare different options and different ideas.
  • It gets daily updated hence keep business with the time.
  • It Collects data for future reference..
  • Time saving.
  • Better decision making due to the large amount of data that business can have so that decisions will be more suitable.
  • Quick data analysis and ease of monitoring.

The consumer IoT devices are manufactured with little concerns to security because it is not worth the time of the manufacturer to bother making the devices secure because six months later a new version is coming out; there is no real lifespan for these things. Well, maybe not for the manufacturer but a lot of consumers will keep the same device for years as long as it works.
